Workshops are available on a first come first served basis. They will be conducted Friday morning and afternoon January 9, 2009. Note: The equipment used in the workshops are personal property of other turners loaned to the symposium. Please keep this in mind and treat this equipment as you would your own. Tony Cortese 8:30am and 1:00pm The workshop will begin with an introduction to relief carving techniques followed by proper layout and design with hands-on relief carving and individual instruction. Individuals with questions and to see what one might achieve upon completing this workshop, go to www.tonycortese.net. Students should supply in addition to safety glasses and masks, a high speed rotary hand piece, tubing, foot pedal control, air regulator, and bits and burrs.
Bruce Hoover
8:30am and 1:00pm Bruce's "Sanding Secrets" addresses the topic of sanding in depth, demystifies the process, and explain how and why it works. You will learn innovative uses for shop tools not even designed for woodturners and a number of ways for sanding outside and inside surfaces using a variety of techniques and available tools. New uses for old familiar tools, self powered sanders, random orbit units and hand sanding methods will be covered. Various abrasives, both familiar old and new cutting edge technology will be discussed. Students will be given the opportunity "test drive" each technique or tool shown before moving on to the next topic. Anyone, beginner to advanced, will walk away from this session with new knowledge on the subject of sanding which will improve your finishing process. Students should bring safety glasses and dust mask.
Don Geiger 8:30am and 1:00pm In Don's hands-on sharpening class you will gain an understanding of a variety of sharpening techniques. You will learn how to set-up or improve your sharpening station and how to maintain it so you will attain optimum performance. The use of several purchased and shop-built jigs and hand sharpening will be covered. Students are strongly recommended to bring several varieties of tools so they can be sharpened during the class. Several sharpening systems and jigs will be available for use by the students. Students should bring safety glasses, a dust mask and several tools.
Emory McLaughlin *8:30am
Workshop* Emory will be teaching intermediate pen making. Students will assemble predrilled components to create a laminated pen. They will then finish the pen using a CA glue to obtain a high gloss durable finish. Students should bring safety glasses, masks, basic turning tools such as spindle gouge, parting tool, and skew chisel. *1:00pm
Workshop* Students will make a decorative lidded box with chatter work on the lid. The finished box will be approximately the size of their "pinky finger". Students should bring safety glasses, masks, 3/8" spindle gouge and a thin parting tool.
Ron Browning 8:30am and 1:00pm Ron will be teaching his method of a "no measure" slip fit lid on a box. The joint used on this box can be used for other applications, i.e., Christmas ornaments, hollow forms etc. Spindle turning, end grain hollowing, and sanding techniques will be improved by this workshop. Students should bring safety glasses, dust mask, 1/2" or 3/8" bowl gouge (regular grind, not side grind) 1/2" spindle gouge, parting tool and 1/2" round nose scraper.
